AI Helps Breast Cancer Detection: An AI tool tested by the NHS (the UK’s National Health Service) successfully identified tiny signs of breast cancer in 11 women that had been missed by human doctors. The tool, called Mia, was piloted alongside NHS clinicians and analyzed the mammograms of over 10,000 women. Most of them were cancer-free, but it successfully flagged all of those with symptoms, as well as an extra 11 the doctors did not identify. 🧑‍⚕️

What is a Neural Network?

Imagine a computer program that learns like a brain. That's kind of what a neural network is. It's a technique used in artificial intelligence (AI) that loosely mimics how the human brain works. Here's the basic idea:

  • The brain is made up of billions of connected neurons. These neurons send signals to each other, which is how humans learn and process information.

  • A neural network is a web of interconnected nodes, like simplified versions of neurons. These nodes are arranged in layers.

  • Information gets passed from layer to layer, with each layer making calculations based on the information it receives.

  • By adjusting the connections between the nodes (like changing the strength of connections between neurons), the neural network can learn and improve its performance on a specific task.

Here's an analogy: imagine you're training a computer to recognize cats in pictures. You show the neural network a bunch of pictures, labeled as either having a cat or not. The neural network makes adjustments based on the data points it sees, eventually learning to identify cats in new pictures.

Neural networks are powerful because they can learn complex patterns from data, making them useful for tasks like image recognition, speech recognition, and generating creative text formats, like poems or code. Here are some key things to remember about neural networks:

  • They are inspired by the brain, but they are not exactly like brains.

  • They are good at learning patterns from data.

  • They are used in many different AI applications.
